Jumpers & The Capitol Unification
The President returns to the White House at the start of this segment.
Lisa Stark provides additional information regarding the communications between individuals on the flights hijacked and individuals at American Airlines. There is video of the 2nd plane hitting the World Trade Center moments before Channel 7 switches back to local coverage in Washington DC.
ABCs James Walker provides a summary report of the events in Manhattan starting 12 minutes into the segment. Several survivors provided first-hand accounts of the events as the attacks were taking place. Onlookers speak about watching individuals jumping out of the buildings (something that none of the major networks decided to broadcast on television at the time).
27 minutes into the segment, leaders of the House and Senate congregate on the US Capitol steps and address the nation regarding the events of the day. Politically motivated or not, this was one of the key events of the day which showed solidarity and unification as a nation on a day when so many horrific events had taken place. The singing of God Bless America 33 minutes into the segment was nothing short of extraordinary. It is one of those rare moments when you can hear the voice of ABC anchor Peter Jennings cracking.
